6.22.10 – Week of Rain!

What a difference one week can make!  Since my last update, we have received around 5″ of rain.  With the ground now completely saturated and the ditches full, the water has nowhere to go… which means water is ponding in the fields.  High winds and a little hail have accompanied the rains, and local fields are reflecting the abuse.  The low spots in fields are drowning out corn and soybeans, and the wind has reaped havoc on many corn fields in the area.

Between showers, we have had the opportunity to monitor progress on our starter fertilizer plot.  The corn planted without starter is currently 12-15″ shorter.  Throughout this spring, the check strip has consistently been shorter, but the height difference has really developed recently.  We are excited to track the progress throughout the summer.
